The spokesperson of India’s Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal, has confirmed that former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is currently in India. During the weekly briefing on Thursday, he provided this information in response to a question from journalists. Jaiswal stated, “For security reasons, Sheikh Hasina came to India on very short notice and is still here. Her stay is ongoing.”
Speculation Regarding Her Stay
For some time, there had been confusion regarding Sheikh Hasina’s whereabouts. Some media outlets speculated that she had traveled to the United Arab Emirates, while others mentioned that the Indian government had issued her a ‘travel document.’ However, putting an end to these rumors, the spokesperson of India’s Ministry of External Affairs clarified that Sheikh Hasina is in India and her stay will continue.
India’s Reaction to Arrest Warrants
During the briefing, journalists also asked about the arrest warrants issued by Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal against Sheikh Hasina and 45 others, including Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader. In response, Jaiswal said, “We have seen reports on this matter.” However, he did not provide further comments on the issue.
Update on Visa Process
Since Sheikh Hasina’s departure from Bangladesh, the visa process for Bangladeshis entering India has not yet returned to normal. In response to questions from the media, Jaiswal explained that visas are being issued on a limited basis for urgent needs and medical purposes. He added, “If the law and order situation improves, the visa process will also become more streamlined.”
India’s Stance on Minority Protection
Jaiswal also mentioned that India had previously issued statements regarding attacks on minorities in Bangladesh and the vandalism of Durga Puja pandals. He noted that the interim government of Bangladesh had assured the protection of minorities, and India expects that promise to be upheld.
With these clarifications, the Ministry of External Affairs of India made it clear that Sheikh Hasina is still in India and that her stay will continue for the time being.
