After the effects of Cyclone Dana have dissipated, the water level in the rivers has receded due to the ebbing tide. This morning, Friday, the banks of the Kapatakkha River in the Madinabad area of Khulna’s Koyra upazila are visible.
Since Friday morning, the skies over Khulna city and its surrounding upazilas have been sunny, with normal weather conditions despite occasional clouds. While the impact of Cyclone Dana has largely diminished, the weather office has indicated a possibility of rain later in the day.
According to Amirul Azad, a senior meteorologist at the Khulna weather office, Cyclone Dana is crossing the Odisha coast in India. Although its effects have mostly receded in the Khulna region, some rain may occur this afternoon as the final blow from the cyclone. From 6 AM Thursday to 6 AM Friday, Khulna recorded 67 millimeters of rainfall.
Observations in various parts of Khulna show that tidal water is flowing normally in the rivers, including the Bhairab, Rupsa, and Kazi Bacha. Outside the low-lying areas of the city, there is no significant water accumulation, and daily life and transportation are proceeding normally.
However, fear regarding the embankments remains among residents of the coastal upazilas. Nishit Kumar Mondal, joint general secretary of the voluntary organization Agomoni Sangha in Sutarkhali village of Dacope upazila, expressed concerns about potential flooding and the risks associated with rising tides. He noted that the Sutarkhali River is eroding their access road, raising worries about agricultural production.
Meanwhile, 604 cyclone shelters have been prepared in Khulna to respond to the situation. Following intermittent heavy rains from Wednesday night to Thursday evening, there were additional showers late Thursday night. The return of sunshine today has brought relief to the residents.
