Death Toll Rises Amidst Protests:
On August 2, 2024, two more individuals were killed in violent clashes involving police, ruling Awami League (AL) activists, and demonstrators. These deaths added to a rising toll of over 200 casualties since mid-July, intensifying public outrage and fueling nationwide protests demanding justice and political reform. Protesters accuse the government of excessive use of force during demonstrations.

“Droho Jatra” March for Justice:
A massive march, called “Droho Jatra,” brought thousands of people, including students, teachers, lawyers, cultural activists, and members of civil society, from the National Press Club to Shaheed Minar. Protesters used creative expressions such as poetry recitations, songs, and street dramas to voice solidarity with the victims. This movement represents a unifying call for accountability and justice amid the escalating political crisis.

Planned Nationwide Non-Cooperation Movement:
Protesters announced plans for a nationwide non-cooperation movement starting August 4, 2024. The move aims to pressurize the government further into addressing their demands, including accountability for the deaths and reforms in governance.

Government’s Response and Facebook Shutdown:
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina extended an invitation for dialogue, urging protesters to meet her at Gonobhaban. Meanwhile, authorities blocked Facebook for seven hours, a tactic previously used to suppress information flow during protests.

Background to the Crisis

Despite some adjustments, protests have continued, fueled by grievances about governance, economic disparity, and allegations of autocracy under Hasina’s leadership.
