Russian forces are advancing rapidly in eastern Ukraine, capturing significant territory over the past month. Analysts say this marks Russia’s fastest progress toward Ukraine since the war began in 2022, according to a Reuters report.
Territory Controlled by Russia:
Based on open-source maps, Russia now controls 18% of Ukraine’s territory. This includes the entirety of Crimea, 80% of Donbas (Luhansk and Donetsk), 70% of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, and 3% of Kharkiv.
In the past week, Russian forces captured 235 square kilometers, while in November alone, they gained control of 600 square kilometers. According to a report by Agentstvo, Russia is setting weekly and monthly records for the territory captured.
Progress Since July:
Since July, Russia has been advancing in eastern Ukraine. Simultaneously, Ukraine captured a small part of western Kursk. However, Russia’s pace of advancement has significantly increased since then.
In the Donetsk region, Russian forces have advanced toward the city of Pokrovsk and entered the city of Kurakhove. Analysts believe Russia is gradually encircling these areas and launching attacks using artillery and glide bombs.
Ukraine’s Stance:
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that peace would not be possible until all Russian-occupied territories are reclaimed. However, Ukraine’s military is reportedly under pressure due to challenges in troop and equipment supply.
Western Experts’ Views:
Western experts predict that the war may drag on further. Although accurate figures on casualties are unavailable, it is estimated that millions have been affected or killed in the conflict.
