Heavy Rains and Landslides Trigger Flash Floods in Sherpur and Mymensingh, Submerging Over 160 Villages

Severe rains and landslides have caused flash floods in Sherpur and Mymensingh, submerging over 160 villages and trapping hundreds of thousands of families in waterlogged areas. In Sherpur’s Nalitabari, Srivardi, and Jhenaigati upazilas, at least 113 villages were flooded, while 50 villages in Mymensingh’s Dhobaura have also been affected.

The floods have devastated croplands and washed away fish from ponds, leading to significant losses for local communities. The embankments of the Bhogai and Chellakhali rivers in Sherpur collapsed due to heavy rainfall, causing the water to overflow into nearby areas. Rising river levels since Thursday evening led to flooding in Garakanda, Nichpara, Poragaon, Nayabil, and Ramchandrakura, as well as 40 villages in Jhenaigati. Key roads such as the Nanni-Ambagan and Nanni-Madhutila Ecopark routes have been submerged, halting traffic. In Srivardi Upazila, 2,000 people in 13 villages have been stranded by heavy rains and landslides. In Mymensingh, the continuous downpour caused the Netai River dam to break, flooding 50 villages in Dhobaura and leaving at least 20,000 people waterlogged.

Many areas have lost electricity and mobile phone connectivity, worsening the situation. Local authorities are monitoring the situation and preparing relief efforts to assist the affected communities.
