The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has terminated the contract with national team coach Chandika Hathurusingha and appointed Phil Simmons as the new coach. This announcement was made on October 17, 2024, through a BCB press release.
Reasons Behind Hathurusingha’s Dismissal
Recently, Hathurusingha was served with a show-cause notice by the BCB for alleged misconduct and breach of discipline, with a deadline of 48 hours to respond. After reviewing his response, BCB called an urgent meeting where it was decided that his explanation was unsatisfactory. As a result, his actions were deemed as “negligence of duty,” leading to the immediate termination of his contract.
Phil Simmons Takes Over as New Coach
BCB has appointed Phil Simmons as the head coach for the South Africa, Afghanistan, and West Indies series, as well as the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025. Simmons has already arrived in Dhaka and visited the Mirpur stadium, where he is set to conduct his first training session with the Bangladesh team. If he performs well during these series, there is a possibility that his contract could be extended further.
Potential Legal Battle
Despite the termination, Chandika Hathurusingha has hinted at taking legal action, seeking to challenge the decision. The BCB, however, is also prepared for a legal confrontation. According to sources, there are allegations against Hathurusingha for physically assaulting a player during the World Cup, a claim that BCB is taking seriously. BCB emphasizes that it followed the proper legal procedures by initially issuing a show-cause notice before terminating his contract.
Challenges Ahead for the New Coach
Phil Simmons faces significant challenges as he takes charge for four crucial tournaments. His performance during this period will be critical in determining his long-term role with the Bangladesh team. Meanwhile, the fallout from Hathurusingha’s termination and any ensuing legal consequences will be closely watched.
