A case has been filed against 11 individuals, including former Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Harun Or Rashid, for alleged involvement in the kidnapping and extortion of a businessman in Fatulla, Narayanganj Sadar Upazila. Businessman Shah Alam lodged the case on Tuesday in the Judicial Magistrate Amli Court of Narayanganj.
The court acknowledged the complaint and instructed the officer-in-charge (OC) of Fatulla Police Station to officially register the case. In addition to Harun, the accused include Jatiya Sramik League Central Committee Organizing Secretary Kausar Ahmed and several others. Five unidentified individuals were also named in connection with the case.
According to Shah Alam, the incident took place on September 15, 2020, when the accused allegedly snatched important business documents and Tk 20 lakh from him at gunpoint. They reportedly kidnapped him and took him to an office in Aliganj, where he was beaten and forced to sign blank checks and stamp papers. The businessman also claimed that the group embezzled property worth approximately Tk 7 crore with the help of others.
Fatulla OC Shariful Islam confirmed that the case has been registered following the court’s order. This is not the first accusation against Harun; another case was filed on September 25, 2023, for kidnapping and extortion in a separate incident in Kanchpur, Siddhirganj.
The latest allegations have brought renewed scrutiny to Harun and the other accused individuals, raising concerns over the involvement of law enforcement in such criminal activities.
