The people of Pakistan are in turmoil, protesting for the release of world-renowned cricket legend and former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Pakistan’s political landscape has especially heated up following the election of Republican candidate Donald Trump as President in the United States. The issue has sparked intense debate among the country’s ministers and opposition leaders.
Pakistan’s The Dawn and The Print report that following Donald Trump’s victory, a sense of hope has arisen among supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party, Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
Citing The Dawn and The Print, AFP relayed this news from Rawalpindi.
PTI leader Syed Zulfi Bukhari told the media, “I will discuss the repression against Imran Khan with the newly elected Republican President Donald Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, and son-in-law, Jared Kushner.”
He stated that Trump has a “soft corner” for Imran and had previously expressed deep concern over Imran’s imprisonment.
However, the ruling Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz – PML-N) has dismissed such claims by PTI. Both Pakistan’s Defense and Foreign Ministers, as well as the Foreign Ministry spokesperson, have rejected the notion.
Following Trump’s victory, a congratulatory message was posted from Imran’s X (formerly Twitter) account. The post described Trump as a “very good friend” of Imran. It read, “Heartfelt congratulations to Trump on behalf of myself and PTI for winning the U.S. Presidential election. His victory reflects the American people’s will against all odds. Based on mutual respect for democracy and human rights, Trump will be beneficial for Pakistan-U.S. relations. We hope he will play a strong role in promoting global peace, human rights, and democracy.”
