Iran provides written assurance to the United States: No attempt to assassinate Trump

Former US President Donald Trump claimed, based on intelligence reports, that Iran was attempting to assassinate him before the US elections. Last week, the US Department of Justice charged an Iranian national with plotting to kill Trump.

On Friday, Washington revealed that it had received a written assurance from Tehran before the elections. The letter, delivered through Swiss diplomats, stated that Iran was not attempting to assassinate Trump.

This information was reported by NBC News on Saturday.

Earlier in September, the Biden administration had sent a warning to Tehran via Switzerland, cautioning that any attempt to assassinate Trump would be considered an act of war.

Since there are no formal diplomatic relations between Washington and Tehran, Switzerland often serves as an intermediary for communication between the two countries.

According to NBC, the Biden administration first received intelligence in July indicating that Iran was plotting to assassinate Trump. Following this, the Pentagon increased security measures around the former president.

In September, Trump himself claimed that he was facing significant threats from Iran.

Last week, the US Department of Justice formally charged an Iranian citizen named Farhad Shakery with attempting to assassinate Trump.

Citing US officials, The New York Times reported that the alleged plot was seen as retaliation for the 2020 US drone strike that killed Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani.

In the written assurance sent to Washington, Iran expressed outrage over Soleimani’s assassination, describing it as a “criminal act.” However, Tehran emphasized that it sought justice in accordance with international law.
