New Election Commissioners Including CEC to Take Oath on Sunday

The Election Commission (EC) has been formed with retired Secretary AMM Nasir Uddin as Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), along with four Election Commissioners.

The newly appointed CEC and four Election Commissioners will take their oath formally on Sunday (November 24). Chief Justice Syed Refat Ahmed will administer the oath to the new CEC and the four commissioners at 1:30 PM that day.

Earlier, on November 21, the Cabinet Division issued a notification appointing retired Secretary AMM Nasir Uddin as the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). A separate notification announced the appointment of four Election Commissioners.

The newly appointed Election Commissioners are:

  • Retired Additional Secretary Md. Anwarul Islam Sarkar
  • Retired District and Sessions Judge Abdur Rahmanul Masud
  • Retired Joint Secretary Begum Tahmida Ahmad
  • Retired Brigadier General Abul Fazal Md. Sanaullah

On October 29, the interim government formed a six-member search committee headed by Supreme Court Appellate Division Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury to form the EC. The other committee members were:

  • High Court Division Justice AKM Asaduzzaman
  • Comptroller and Auditor General Md. Nurul Islam
  • Public Service Commission Chairman (PSC) Mobassher Monem
  • Former Professor of International Relations at Dhaka University Dr. Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar
  • Former PSC Chairman Professor Zinnatun Nesa Tahmida Begum

The search committee submitted a list of 10 proposed names to the President at Bangabhaban on November 20 evening. Finally, on Thursday, five individuals were selected from this list to form the new Election Commission (EC).
