Former Proctor of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur, Shariful Islam, has been detained in connection with the murder of Abu Sayeed, who was killed during an anti-discrimination student protest. ABM Zakir Hossain, Superintendent of Police at the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) in Rangpur, confirmed the information to Prothom Alo.
This morning, the PBI officer stated that the plaintiff in the Abu Sayeed murder case submitted clear evidence, including video footage and other documents, implicating Shariful Islam and six others. For the sake of the investigation, Shariful Islam was detained last night at 9 PM. He will be presented in court today.
Shariful Islam’s wife, R Tasnim, told Prothom Alo at 8 AM today that a PBI team in plain clothes arrived at Shariful’s in-laws’ house in Alamnagar, Rangpur, yesterday evening around 7 PM. They took Shariful for questioning without an arrest warrant. She questioned why her husband was detained without proper legal procedures.
On July 16, during an anti-discrimination movement in Rangpur, Begum Rokeya University student Abu Sayeed was fatally shot by police. On August 18, Abu Sayeed’s elder brother, Ramzan Ali, filed a case against 17 individuals, including former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Rangpur Range Abdul Baten, and former Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md. Moniruzzaman.
