The interim government has announced an extension of the holidays for Eid-ul-Fitr, Eid-ul-Azha, and Sharadiya Durga Puja in 2025. The Eid-ul-Fitr holiday period will now last for five days, while Eid-ul-Azha holidays have been extended to six days. The Durga Puja holidays will span two days, as confirmed by the Chief Adviser’s Office.
Currently, public holidays for these festivals include three days each for Eid celebrations and one day for Durga Puja. The changes in the holiday schedule were finalized during a meeting of the advisory council, chaired by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus at the Chief Adviser’s Office in Tejgaon, Dhaka.
As per the new holiday list, each Eid will include one general holiday, with the remaining days designated as holidays through executive orders. For Sharadiya Durga Puja, Bijoya Dashami will remain a general holiday, while Navami, the preceding day, will be observed as an executive-order holiday.
Historically, holiday extensions for religious festivals have been implemented through executive orders. Last year, the government added an extra day to the Durga Puja holiday in this manner. The current extension proposal, initially put forward by the Ministry of Public Administration, has now received formal approval from the Advisory Council.
