Speculation about a Tesla smartphone, often referred to as the “Tesla Model Pi” or “Tesla P,” has been circulating online, despite multiple denials from Tesla and its CEO, Elon Musk. While there is no official confirmation or concrete evidence to suggest a Tesla phone is in development, the idea continues to fuel discussions, particularly among tech enthusiasts and analysts.
The rumors gained momentum in 2021 after a YouTube video showcased a designer’s concept of a Tesla phone. However, this video was not based on any real leaks or insider information, but rather a speculative design. Since then, many online sources have relied on this concept video, continuing to perpetuate the idea of a Tesla smartphone.
Elon Musk has publicly denied the possibility of a Tesla phone multiple times. Most recently, in June 2024, during a livestream, he firmly stated, “We are not going to do a Tesla phone,” putting an end to the speculation for many. Musk had also addressed similar rumors in November 2023, shortly after Tesla’s acquisition of Twitter (now rebranded as X), when he mentioned the potential for an “alternative phone” if X faced issues with app store restrictions. However, he later clarified that Tesla had no plans to develop a smartphone.
Despite Musk’s denials, some analysts believe a Tesla phone could eventually become a reality. Analysts from Morgan Stanley have suggested that a Tesla smartphone would be a logical extension of the company’s connected car ecosystem, which already relies heavily on smartphones for functionalities like unlocking vehicles and controlling certain features via apps.
Additionally, Musk has expressed concerns about security issues related to X’s integration with AI technologies, particularly OpenAI’s ChatGPT. These concerns have sparked renewed speculation that Tesla may eventually develop a phone to address security challenges, though Musk’s current stance on this remains ambiguous.
For now, the Tesla phone remains a rumor without any solid foundation. While analysts see potential for a smartphone that seamlessly integrates with Tesla’s technology, Musk’s repeated denials indicate that, at least in the near future, a Tesla smartphone is not on the horizon.
