Calling for calm among the protesters in front of Bangabhaban, the coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, Hasnat Abdullah and Sarjis Alam, said, “We hope that President Md. On Tuesday (October 22) at 11:45 PM, several student leaders, including coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, Hasnat Abdullah and Sarjis Alam, arrived in front of Bangabhaban. Addressing the gathered protesters, they said, “We are hopeful that President Md. Shahabuddin will resign by Thursday. Otherwise, we will resume our protests.” Following this announcement, the protesters gradually began to leave the Bangabhaban area. However, a group of protesters is still stationed in front of Bangabhaban.
Earlier in the afternoon, an agitated crowd began to gather in front of the President’s residence, chanting slogans demanding his resignation.
The tension arose after a comment made by President Md. Shahabuddin regarding the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. This led to calls for the President’s resignation, prompting leaders and activists from several student organizations to stage a protest in front of Bangabhaban starting Tuesday afternoon.
Among the participating organizations were Inqilab Mancha, Raktim July ’24, 36 July Parishad, Ziaur Rahman Social Welfare Council, and the Anti-Fascist Student-People’s Forum. The protesters were seen chanting slogans against the President. During the protest, a clash with the police left several protesters injured.
Amidst the escalating tension, a meeting was held in the afternoon between Chief Justice Syed Rafat Ahmed and several key officials, including Legal Adviser Asif Nazrul, Information Adviser Nahid Islam, and IGP Md. Moinul Islam. The meeting was also attended by RAB DG AKM Shahidur Rahman and DMP Commissioner Md. Mainul Hasan.
